When our Default is Fear

Updated: Jun 26

I don't think I have ever seen this much fear before. Fear of Covid19, fear of losing a business or job, fear of reopening, fear of staying closed, liberals fear conservatives, conservatives fear liberals, fear of police, fear of supremacy, fear of being politically incorrect, fear of saying too much or too little, fear of offending, fear of being targeted, fear of guns, fear of a revolution, fear of the status quo, fear of different races, fear of different genders, fear of different sexual orientations, fear of the media, fear of the government, fear, fear, fear.

It feels like a whole culture shift of fear has been perpetuated so that we are constantly unsure of ourselves, our actions and of others. I. Am. Exhausted. Aren't you?

When we're scared, we're stressed and anxious so our body's sympathetic nervous system kicks in which is our fight or flight mode. Staying in this state can have terrible effects on our body including a suppressed immune system which is exactly what we DON'T want during a pandemic. Life is tough and it will continue to be, if not more so, which is why it is so incredibly important to find ways to regularly trigger your parasympathetic nervous system.

The parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) is the yin to the sympathetic nervous system's yang. Ways to activate the PNS are with meditation, yoga, being in nature, breath work and good old-fashioned playing, to name a few. We all hear talk of self care this and self care that, but the truth is we NEED it in times like this. We are inundated daily with information and fear and uncertainty and our bodies are suffering.

When our default is fear we have to consciously make efforts to find the balance. I know it can be a struggle, but start small by unplugging for ten minutes and breathe in a quiet space. We need to support each other more than ever right now, but remember to put your oxygen mask on first.
